Like with Epsom, drying ground was the order of the day, although the official description was unchanged from the overnight good, good to soft in places and the GoingStick reading was, surprisingly, still given as 8.0.
This was won by a 50-1 shot last year and looked the sort of race in which a repeat wouldn't have shocked, but it was ultimately won decisively by the second favourite. I'M OVER ERE DAD certainly looked one to consider on the strength of an encouraging reappearance at Yarmouth last month, but all six of his wins had been over 1m - and five of them on the all-weather.
His trainer, though, was rightly confident about the trip and, in fact, is eyeing a step up in distance to 1m2f at Newbury on Thursday in a Bollinger Champagne series qualifer. He'll carry a 6lb penalty but is likely to be in the shake-up again.
Barathea Dreams ran his best race for some time, justifying his quick reappearance, while nine-year-old The Gaikwar continues to justify his career with a keeping-on third - he'd been ninth in this 12 months earlier.
Daniel Thomas came here at the top of his form, searching for a hat-trick after winning at Lingfield (Polytrack) and at this trip at Redcar, where he had won easily. He was burdened with a 6lb penalty and top weight, though, and these factors told.
Palmetto Point could have been expected to strip fitter for his course-and-distance return a week earlier (had finished tired sixth of 12), but he was rather disappointing.
This was Danish Monarch's first run since November 2006, and he will inevitably come on for it. Mythical Charm has shaped like a return to this trip would be in her favour on a couple of occasions in recent outings, though her most recent run had been in early January. She had finished sixth in this 12 months ago and has won off a 4lb lower mark than this in the past 12 months, so all in all this was a disappointment.
Sky Quest had run well to be fourth of 16 over course and distance on his return but had been slightly disappointing at Newmarket since. Off a mark 2lb lower than he has scored off in the past 12 months, he was again well below-par.
