KENSINGTON OVAL had plenty to recommend him as a brother to the classy Ask, andhe could not have made a better start to his racecourse career. Having raced in mid-division, he was pulled off the rail for his effort over a furlong out and took the favourite's measure with 100 yards or so to go.
The winner was well on top at the finish and will have no trouble getting further, but Ask has shown himself to be very effective at this trip this season, and so it would be no surprise if he won a nice race at 1m2f before being stepped up. He has plenty of improvement in him and could be smart.
Newbury second Eqbaal set a decent standard, and connections were not making excuses for his defeat. He looks sure to win a maiden, and is eligible for handicaps now, although he will probably have a stiff enough mark.
Newmarket third Seventh Cavalry ran another good race in fourth, up there all of the way, while Kossack, who was also a place behind him that day, ran better than his bare finishing position suggests in fifth, as he was running on from the back of the field when his rider sat up momentarily inside the final furlong, and he then kept on again. Both will have the handicap option after another run, and Kossack in particular looks the type to be placed to advantage over further.
Intercom never looked like getting in a blow, but he wasn't disgraced and will be better for the experience.
Jamie Spencer reported that Catholic Hill lost his action
