Analyis of the race
The going went to officially heavy during the first day of the meeting, but had dried up sufficiently to be described officially as soft, and jockeys described it as ‘very sticky, like a pudding'.
SWEET SMILE handled it all right and helped by thebenefit of a previous run he stuck to his task to win with nothing to spare. Like the rest he will appreciate a better surface and though he has plenty of pace he will get another furlong.
Becausewecan made an encouraging debut looking as if he had come to win the race at one stage. He is sure to be all the better for the experience of this rather tricky track for two-year-olds. He should not be long winning.
Scarth Hill was soon outpaced and well behind, but he finished closer than it had looked possible and a longer trip and better ground will suit. Shifting Gold needs time and a longer trip than this.
