Fairfield Princess tracked leading trio, progress on inner and led entering final furlong, driven and just held on
Mambazo held up in rear, hanging but progress over 1f out, ran on to take 2nd last 50yds and closing fast on winner at finish
Azygous chased leaders, effort under pressure 2f out, closed from over 1f out, never quite pace to challenge
Desert Opal pressed leading pair, tried to challenge over 1f out, kept on same pace under pressure
Smokin Beau pressed leader, not quicken and lost place just over 1f out, tried to rally inside final furlong, one pace
Spoof Master led, headed entering final furlong, weakened last 100yds
Green Lagonda never better than midfield, under pressure and outpaced well over 1f out
Lady Bahia started slowly, well in rear, pushed along and outpaced final 2f, never near leaders
Willhewiz chased leaders, ridden halfway, soon struggling
Gross Prophet outpaced and last after 2f, never a factor
Decider ridden in midfield before halfway, no progress, weakened over 1f out
The Magic Blanket stalls opening as blindfold removed, pulled hard and held up in rear, some progress on wide outside halfway, weakened over 1f out, tailed off
The favourites Spoof Master and Smokin Beau took each other on for the lead, which allowed the well-drawn FAIRFIELD PRINCESS to get a good tow, and she was able to squeeze through on the rails to lead a furlong out and did enough to hold off the fast-finishing Mambazo.
She had been off for 15 weeks, during which time she had been successfully covered by Cadeaux Genereux, and everything dropped right for her.
Mambazo, with cheekpieces replacing the usual eyeshield, tends to run his best races here, but over 6f and was unable to go the early pace before finishing with a flourish to almost catch the winner. He is on a long losing run but is 10lb below his last winning mark and things may finally fall his way if he is able to repeat this effort.
Lady Bahia missed the break and was unable to get in a blow.
MIcky Fenton reported that The Magic Blanket lost his action.
