Brought to near his peak by two previous outings this season, the well-supported winner responded to hard riding to take closer order over a furlong out and caught long- time leader Lipocco with something up his sleeve.
All roads now lead to the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, for which he was cut to 14-1 from 16s by William Hill. His trainer Luca Cumani said: "He''s always needed a couple of outings to come to form." His rider Jimmy Fortune observed: "He wants a big field with plenty of horses around him."
Lipocco must take a share of the glory for raising his game and making Balthazaar''s Gift fight tooth and nail for the spoils. He will be even more effective granted faster conditions and it was no surprise to see Hills cut him to 33-1 from 150s for the Jubilee and to 14-1 from 25s for the Wokingham.
Prime Defender had finished just in front of the winner inthe Duke of York. He arrived holding every chance over a furlong out but was unable to maintain his run.
Hoh Mike looked superb in the paddock but was unable to transfer his York superiority over the first and third. Held up in customary fashion, he made his move on the far side but when the chips were down could make no further impression. This was a shade disappointing.
Edge Closer was competitive throughout, only weakening at the business end. Drier conditions would have helped his cause.
Pivotal Flame raced keenly in contention on his return from a lengthy absence. Although weakening out of the money he should be all the better with this under his belt.
