He was held up until making his progress over a furlong out and kept on to lead on the post, but would have been giving the runner-up 32lb in a handicap and it is obviously hard to gauge the merit of this performance.
Channel Crossing ran a remarkable race granted the enormity of his task and led well inside the final furlong until collaredin the final stride. He had been beaten a long way on his reappearance, but on this showing can win at this level.
Penny Island took up the running before leaving the back straight and held that position until inside the final furlong, running creditably enough, but the position of the lowly rated runner-up clouds the issue.
