TAX FREE, second in this event last year, followed up a Listed win at Naas earlier in the month with a performance that combined the speed and grit that characterises so many of his trainer's sprinters. He has now won a Group 3 in each of the three main European jurisdictions, and no doubt will return later in the season in a bid to plunder further euros.n Benbaun enhanced his reputation as one of the venue's great specialists. The 2007 Abbaye winner made it four seconds here, to add to the six wins that have included three successive renewals of the Flying Five. Mark Wallace feels that he is good as ever, reckoning that this represented a step-up from his performance in finishing seventh in the King's Stand, and is looking forward to maintaining the momentum built here. The Nunthorpe and another tilt at the Flying Five are on the agenda on his way to the Abbaye.
Desert Lord, another former Abbaye winner and beaten a head by Benbaun in the 2006 Flying Five, returned to form after a poor run at Chantilly, though unable to reproduce the excellent effort of his third behind Fleeting Spirit in the Temple Stakes, when he finished in front of Tax Free at level weights. It is great to see him still going strong at the age of eight, an example of the longevity that is such an attractive aspect to this catgeory.
Myboycharlie, last season's Prix Morny winner, ran very flat on his reappearance in the Greenlands and his performance was no more encouraging here on his first attempt at the minimum trip. It looks a case of back to the drawing-board for a colt who seemed likely to make a big name for himself inthe wake of a fine juvenile campaign.
The market suggested that not a great deal was expected of Elletelle, but the Queen Mary heroine is another whose three-year-old form is beginning to contrast sharply with what she showed as a juvenile.
Contest, who beat Tax Free in a Listed race at Cork at the beginning of May, was below his best without apparent excuse, while Senor Benny was up against it in this company at this stage of his career. [AS]
