Analyis of the race

One of the strongest 6f handicaps of the year, alongside the likes of the Stewards' Cup and Ayr Gold Cup, and one with a history of throwing up Group-race candidates.

BIG TIMER is already a battle-hardened Group performer, having won the Group 3 Acomb at two before struggling through a truncated three-year-old career not helped by a dip on the dirt at Belmont. He has not been disgraced back in Group company recently and connections are now eyeing another Group 3 in the shape of the International Stakes at the Curragh.

There was the usual furious pace and they split into two groups. Seven stuck steadfastly to the inside rail with Conquest surprisingly putting the pace to the race there with Capricorn Run, looking to be a couple of lengths clear of the main stands' side pack after a couple of furlongs. However, there was precious little in it between both sides at the line, with stands' side runners occupying the second, fourth and fifth spots.

Beaver Patrol improved nine placings on his run in this last year and seven on the year before, but with a similar effort in that he could not go the early pace but was finishing off strongly, nearest the stands' rail. He has been dropped 3lb for future races, which reflects that he has not been in stunning form in hot 6f handicaps this season. This was a return to his very best and with his liking for both Goodwood and Epsom, he leaps into the Stewards' Cup picture.

King's Apostle finished with a flourish. Despite the handicapper doing his best during the colt's spectacular winning run last season, this four-year-old still looks progressive and the pace cannot be fast enough for him. He won his maiden over 7f and it would be no surprise to see him step back up in trip sometime this season.

Knot In Wood travelled notably strongly on the stands' side as many around him were niggled along. He picked up well but continues to struggle against the handicapper, who still has him off a high mark despite having eased him back from three figures.

Tamagin blazed away and has done remarkably well to finish fifth when you consider he was hanging markedly right from the halfway group. As he has also been hit by the handicapper for his all-weather successes, he can have a big say in the othertop handicaps.

Bentong looked distracted as the winner crossed him before he picked up strongly in the final furlong to show signs of a revival. Northern Fling deserves rating a shade better than the bare form as he washassled by the hanging New Freedom for fully two furlongs before extracating himself and staying on eyecatchingly against the inside rail when it was all over.

New Freedom looked a hard ride as he hung badly right with his rider having to concentrate on keeping him straight rather than kick on into contention 2f out. This was his first run since April and an abortive Dubai campaign. If straightened out, he can win a big handicap.

Intrepid Jack added to his label of an unlucky horse. He met interference when failing by a neck to catch Dark Missile last year and this time, while winning was not an option, he was producing another finishing flourish when blocked and having to switch right. It probably cost him vying for fourth but he was not going to catch the principals. His mark is already a pound lower and the Stewards' Cup could provide consolation.

Lipocco could not build on his good seasonal return but was not disgraced. Machinist caught the eye - he was not as stupendously slow away as at Epsom last time. He was still disputing last before staying on steadily through the pack stands' side without threatening to land a blow.

It was a surprise to see Conquest blaze away and as such he was not disgraced. There were no hard-luck stories among the well-beaten runners, although the riders of Dark Islander and Nota Bene reported their mounts unsuited to the ground - both riders easing down when well beaten. [BJ]
