Aldirous had not wona race for two years and had been virtually pulled up at Fontwell last week on his first run since December, but trainer Tony Carroll explained that his horse was much better suited by this track than the tight Fontwell circuit and he expects the horse to go on to have a successful summer.
Madam Blaze has been running creditably this spring, her best effort being a second over 3m at Taunton in April. She travelled well through the race and looked the likely winner when taking up the running early in the straight, but Aldirous did her for speed in the closing stages.
Hear Me Out, who has not seen much action since winning a fast-ground bumper three years ago, was patiently-ridden on this first outing in almost seven months. He made eye-catching progress approaching the home turn, but could not really pick up the pace when required and was beaten jumping the second last.
Cleymor House, reverting to hurdling after the handicapper got his measure over fences, was a bit keen in the early stages and his effort petered out tamely in the home straight.
