An undistinguished contest in which TALKINGSTICK, who had pulled too hard on her first two starts for Alison Thorpe after joining her from Ireland, was again keen. But Christian Williams, who was riding the mare for the first time, managed to exert enough control to ensure there was a finishing kick in her and, while she did carry her head awkwardly under pressure, her late burst could not be faulted and she will certainly get further when she strengthens up and learns to settle.

Winsley Hill,who had struggled to see off a moderate rival at Exeter last time, showed improved form under her penalty here and - though run out of it in the final strides - this was a very creditable effort from her.

Moulin De La Croix, who had run too freely last time, was more settled on this occasion but her lack of pace found her out from two out.

Villochely, runner-up on her racecourse debut in a bumper here a fortnight ago, jumped soundly on this hurdling debut and, though unable to make an impression onthe principals from two out, ran well enough to suggest she can pay her way in time.
