SIXTIES ICON has lost his way in 2007 after his reappearance win in the Jockey Club Stakes, but having reportedly been treated for a wind problem he had bounced back to somewhere near his best when chasing home the emerging star Getaway in the corresponding race back at Newmarket again earlier this month. The drop in distance was no worry, as he has never looked short of pace, and having been held up in third behind the modest pace set by Spice Route he moved easily into second around 3f out and thento the front a furlong later. He was immediately in full command and was just pushed clear for a comfortable success. He was fully entitled to win in this sort of style, so it would be silly to get carried away, but his problem seems to be a thing of thepast and he looks his old self again. The Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot is next on the agenda, and Jeremy Noseda has no qualms about reverting to 1m2f in better grade later in the year, as he is talking of a possible crack at the Arlington Million, andhe also has him in the Irish Champion Stakes.
Sweet Lilly has never looked the most straightforward and is an inveterate tail-swisher, but she is not short of ability and ran on up the rail from the back of the field under her 3lb penalty, taking second around half a furlong from home. She is likely to stick to this sort of distance now, and Richard Hughes reckons a bigger field suits her better.
That's the mark Ballinteni recently won a Ripon handicap off, and this was a big ask for him. He was predictably outclassed and finished well back.
Blue Ksar was the main danger to the winner on paper, but there was always a chance he would find this going too quick, as all his wins are on good ground or softer. He didn't look at all comfortable through the last couple of furlongs, and Saeed Bin Suroor confirmed that he had not enjoyed the ground, although he seemed fine afterwards. Frankie Dettori reported that Blue Ksar was unsuited by the going.
