The field again split into two groups for this ordinary sprint handicap and this time the first two emerged on the near side. With the third horse coming more down the middle of the track, there did not appear to be any bias with the draw.The six who came near side went off at a stronger early pace and GUTO eventually dug deep to get on top in the closing stages. He had done all of his previous winning on a sounder surface, but showed up better at Hamilton on soft ground last time out and reversed that form with the penalised Sunley Sovereign, who held every chance on the far side. Considering that he scored off a mark of 88 as a three-year-old, he could well go in again if able to maintain this current mood.

Kings College Boy did the donkey work on the near side and only gave way to the winner late in the day. He appreciated the drop into this grade, goes on any ground, and rates a sound benchmark for the form.

Ursus, who met some support, came through to win the race on the far side and would have been seen to better advantage off a stronger pace. The same can be said of Grimes Faith, who was given every chance on the far side and ran a fair race in defeat.
