BRIEF ENCOUNTER set a decent standard, having twice placed in 5f maidens at Sandown and Great Leighs, and he stayed on too strongly for the gambled-on newcomer Fulham Broadway. He had to be ridden to maintain his early position but responded well to pressure and the interference he caused the favourite over half a furlong out made no difference to the result. He may well have more to offer in 6f nurseries.
Newcomer La Verte Rue stayed on well inside the final furlong to grab second. A half-sister to multiple sprint winners in the US, she travelled quite nicely through the race and was given a very sympathetic ride. Her stable have had a pretty poor year, but she looks more than capable of winning a maiden.
Fulham Broadway, a half-brother to numerous winners who went for £85,000 at the breeze-ups, was heavily backed throughout the day and travelled beautifully into the race. He was driven to lead two out but could not shake the winner and was beaten getting hampered. It may have cost him second and connections will be hopeful he can win back at a bare 5f.
Pressing Matters cost 38,000gns as a yearling and he made a pleasing debut, staying on having been a bit short of room at halfway. He should learn from this and will be helped by 6f.
Private Passion, a half-brother to useful handicapper Master Robbie, stayed on well from an unpromising position, and, like most juveniles from this yard, he should know a lot more next time.
Majestic Lady was not that well away and little went right for her. She had shaped really well on her debut at Sandown and deserves another chance to build on that promise.
