Wonderkid filled the runner-up berth for the second time this week. Again, he couldn't have been ridden any better as he creptinto contention to arrive on the heels of the leaders before the second last, and while there was more than a hint of him flattering to deceive here on Thursday, there was no such thing today as the winner went right away from him after the final fence.
The banks debut of Dix Villez was very encouraging. He took to the obstacles well. Always in the first three, he was ridden after the second last and had every chance, but in the end just wasn't good enough on the day. After a nine-month absence, he showed himself to retain plenty of his old ability. Another having his second run of the week was Berkley, whose stamina was probably stretched in the La Touche here on Thursday when he dropped away in the final mile. He ran much better here, up with the pace the entire way, jumping well and sticking to his task well. He wasn't good enough on the day but showed that there's a bit of life left in him and that he jumps these obstacles well.
Battle Axe finished a place further behind and ran a similar race to the horse one place in front of him, as he made ground to take closer order at much the same time before fading at much thesame time. One horse that wouldn't have been expected to have been a casualty was Never Compromise, who attempted to make all and was still in front when coming to grief at the big double, seven from the finish.
The biggest disappointment was Heads Onthe Ground, who was well below his best at Cheltenham and was beaten even further.
*Chapeaux Bas beat one home and was found to have burst a blood vessel post race.[JOH]
