ARBOR SUPREME, a novice with only one previous chase win to his name, travelled ominously well through the contest and turned into the straight with only Hold The Pin moving as smoothly. However, Hold The Pin had just about come off the bridle when departing at the final fence, whereas it was only after the obstacle that Niall Madden asked Arbor Supreme to go to work, and when he did the response was instant, the six-year-old quickening impressively after such a slog to win going away with plenty in hand.
Still relatively lightly raced, the winner had finished second to Chelsea Harbour over 3m4f at this track in February before running like a non-stayer over the same distance in the Ulster National. However, he showed here that he definitely has deep reserves of stamina and, given that he travels so well and owns a turn of foot, it is not inconceivable that he could develop into an Aintree type within the next two seasons, assuming, that is, he can ride an upward curve of improvement from his still low rating. He might well be upped from a mark of 111 to at least something in the mid 120s after this, so further wins will be required, as they would be if he is to avoid running from miles out of the handicap in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, which connections would like to target.
Black Apalachi ran a cracking race to take second. A second-fence faller when a 66-1 rag in the GrandNational, the Thyestes second raced a little keenly in the early stages but then settled into an easy rhythm under Ruby Walsh. He began to drop out of contention making the run back to the straight for the final time, but, to his credit, he rallied over the final two fences. He is another who would be an obvious contender for a major staying chase success next term.
Wolf Creek also displayed a decent cruising speed and held a big chance turning for home only to weaken, whereas Point Barrow and Mutineer were never really able to throw down challenges but they did plug on.
Forest Leaves eventually flattered only to deceive, and he would have finished one place worse had Hold The Pin not fallen at the final fence. Last month's Fairyhouse second would almost certainly have done no better than second had he not exited, but he ran every bit as well as his odds suggested he would.
Keenan's Future had not been asked a serious question when he lost his rider five out, one fence after top weight Notre Pere made a mistake that knocked the stuffing out of him. He would have preferred softer ground. [LM]
