A fine training performance indeed from Colm Murphy to produce BAMBOOTCHA fit enough to win a competitive handicap of this nature after a ten-month absence. She raced some way off the pace, began to stay on before the second last and absolutely flew homefrom the final flight to get up on the line.
The winning trainer hopes that she'll be good enough to contest the good summer handicap hurdles, and the way she raced here and the way she came home suggests that a race like the Galway Hurdle would suit her very well if she handled the undulations of Ballybrit.
Ruby Walsh doesn't get done on the line often but neither he nor Clear Riposte did anything wrong. Having been up there the whole way and leading from about the third flight, he came underpressure and was headed before the last, but to his credit he battled back strongly and went on again on the run-in before he was mown down on the line. He wouldn't have been a horse that you would have fancied to battle back in the style that he did, soall credit to him, and a good handicap is a very winnable venture on this evidence.
On his handicap debut, Dreamy Gent gave plenty of encouragement that a race of this nature is within his grasp. Racing handily, he was ridden after the second lastand soon came through to lead but couldn't quite last it out and plugged on to be an honourable third.
Top weight MisterHight closed up behind the leaders at the second last before keeping on at the same pace. It was a perfectly respectable while he was never really dangerous to any degree.
Co-favourite Bahrain Storm was a place further behind and ran a similar race. Held up off the pace, he closed up to look as though he would pose a threat three out before his effort flattened out and he came home at one pace.
Morning punt The Fonze was unable to improve his position after beginnimg to stay on before thesecond last, just ahead of the winner's stable companion Total Victory, who was one-paced from the second last having raced handily much of the way.
Cross-channel raider The Duke's Speech was never involved and just stayed on through beaten horses to be nearest at the finish.
Co-favourite Major Sensation was up with the early gallop and having looked as though he expended a fair bit of energy at the head of affairs, he was beaten two out and ran well below his best. He was reported to be slightly jarred post race. [JOH]
