Although he hasn't won since then, he's not fared at all badly on his last couple of starts, as he was beaten only four lengths in the Group 1 Nunthorpe last month and was an unlucky loser in Listed company at Doncaster last time, so he came into this in pretty good shape and was the best horse on official figures.
Appreciating the drying ground, he was allowed to bowl along with the pace and, despite challengers on all sides entering the final furlong, battled on strongly.
Wi Dud hasn't won since September 2006 but has been ultra-consistent over this trip throughout his career, including when only a length and a half behind Look Busy at The Curragh last month. Having been outpaced mid race, he picked up strongly in the final furlong to get within a neck of the winner and overturn that form with the aforementioned Look Busy.
Look Busy has had a fantastic season and ran another blinder, looking the most likely winneruntil just running out of steam in the closing stages. She has been admirable this summer.
Judd Street, who was third in this last year, had a similar chance to Toms Laughter on these terms and, despite being too free in the first-time blinkers early on, battled on well to post his best effort since running with credit in the Temple Stakes in May.
Rowe Park, wearing first-time cheek pieces, was finally free of the Group-race penalty he incurred for winning this race last year but he couldn't repeat the feat. That said, he was not beaten at all far.
Fullandby was reported to have missed the break. [GB]
