JOHNMANDERVILLE looked to be found out in a half-decent nursery over 6f at Pontefract last time, but he had been off the track for over two months since then and improved for this step up to 7f on his return. He is a horse with plenty of size and also seems pretty tough, sohe should make a nice handicapper next year.
Russian George, gelded since he was last seen, was dropped in trip for his handicap debut. Having chased the winner throughout, he kept on strongly to the line.
Fingers were burnt on Dewhurst entry Absent Pleasure, but the horse did nothing wrong and this rates as a huge effort. Nothing had finished closer than fourth from a single-figure stall in the two previous races and, berthed in stall three, he looked to be at a big disadvantage held up more towards the near side than many of these. He did well to get so close, very nearly overcoming the bias, and losses will surely be recouped.
Brooksby looked the type for a 7f nursery when third in a 6f maiden at Goodwood on her previous start, but this ground was probably too quick. She remains of interest and can win off her current sort of mark when there is some give underfoot. Cyflymder, who narrowly beat a subsequent winner when landing his maiden at Chester last time, was not helped by the worst stall of all and is better than he showed.
