ARCHIE RICE was well backed and confirmed the promise he showed when fifth on his debut over 7f at York. He is sprint bred, so this drop in trip suited, and he stuck on well after showing good speed throughout, although he would have been passed in another stride. Although the form is probably nothing out of the ordinary, he has some size and scope and looks capable of progress.
Winged Harriet, a 115,000gns daughter of Hawk Wing, half-sister to dual 6f-7f Listed winner Misu Bond, out of a 1m scorer, was out the back early after starting slowly, but she travelled kindly and, once switched nearside, she picked up from a good five or so lengths behind under hands-and-heels riding. The way she finished was actually reminiscent of her sire's effort in his 2,000 Guineas (although at a completely different level) and, like Hawk Wing, she carried her head just a touch proud. She is clearly talented; it just has to be hoped she goes the right way mentally.
Shabib, a half-brother to a 1m winner, out of a dual 7f juvenile winner, was never too far away and kept on to the line. He should know more next time.
Glowing Praise, a 14,000gns son of Fantastic Light, out of a 1m winner, was backed at big prices and showed ability. He can do better when stepped up in trip and could be half decent next year.
Quick Single, a £24,000 brother to dual 6f-1m1f dirt winner Donerella, ran green early and was doing his best work at the finish. Veroon showed speed but dropped out tamely and was below the form he showed when third in a weak sales race on the July course last time. He might prefer easier ground.
Margarita, a sister to the stable's top-class miler Soviet Song, lacked the speed of some of these and ran green, but she was going on at the finish. Larkham, whose trainer won this last year, dropped out disappointingly and could not confirm the promise he showed when third in a maiden over this trip at the July course on his debut.
