Analyis of the race

A further 4mm of overnight rain maintained the very testing nature of the ground and conditions will play a major part in proceedings throughout the afternoon, especially on the round course where yesterday's times were incredibly slow.

That theme continued in this opening maiden, run in a time some 13 seconds slower than Racing Post Standard, and stamina effectively won the day for HEY UP DAD, who is bred to be suited by middle distances.

Having shaped with promise over an inadequate 6f on debut, he kept grinding away as the pair in front of him began to tire approaching the final furlong and he saw it out best, without suggesting he is anything special. On the plus side for him, the runner-up is rated just 64 so the handicapper cannot go mad and connections reported that he'll probably be put away now before being stepped up to 1m and further next season.

Island Chief was always tracking the pace but he didn't really quicken to any great degree, he just kept on at the one pace and, progressive in two starts coming into this, it's likely we'll see him do better back on more suitable ground.

Royal Society stood out on looks in the paddock but he couldn't make any impression, weakening right away in the closing stages. Given the conditions, he's got to be given another chance next time.
