BIRKSIDE, who was winning sellersand claimers last backend, has made significant progress since. Settled off the pace, he was asked for an effort well over two furlongs out and, switched to find daylight, he found top gear approaching the final furlong before eventually getting on top and then coming repelling the tenacious runner-up. There may be more to come from him yet, and he is due to run here again on Friday.
Prince Sabaah travelled sweetly behind the leaders. Produced to win his race, he did precious little wrong, but he simply came out the wrong side of the photo-finish. He deserves to find compensation.
Collette's Choice, who is in-foal, made a good fist of making the running. She was strongly tackled from a fair way out, but she stuck to her task, even after being headed, to claim third spot, albeit well held by the first two.
There was a gap back to Zaif, who was found wanting to pose a serious threat when the chips were down on his seasonal bow. Rajeh, coming back from a winter break, ran a decent race for a longway before weakening.
Of the others, Ainama, an unlucky looking loser at Chester last week, was again held-up here. Asked for an effort inside the final three furlongs, he looked slightly uneasy and, unable to make any real impression, he was eased down by his jockey inside the last, as though something might have been amiss.
Red Wine, who has been in such good form of late, showed nothing here and finished detached in last; this quick ground probably caught him out. (TO'R)
