The highlight of this contest, however, was the winning performance of COLLECTION, whose success had to be seen to be appreciated. Stepping up to this trip for the first time, he was more settled than he'd been at Doncaster on his reappearance over 7f when he seemed fresh and buzzy and therefore failed to see off his race. Drawn wide, he was dropped in and secured a rails position towards the rear. With the gallop only a modest one, he was keen enough, but he gradually dropped his head and relaxed. As the tempo increased once in line for home, he found his path completely blocked and he had to be switched - in gradual movements - from the inside to the outside.
He still had a lot of running to do approaching the final furlong, but he swept home down the outside, under hands and heels riding, and only needed a backhander close home after he'd hung slightly to his left once in front.
He ran here off a mark of 80 and his future may well depend on what the handicapper does to him. But it is worthy of note that he holds a Derby entry. Stranger things have happened than for a horse like him to make sufficient improvement in a short time to at least contest the Derby and, in a year in which the Derby waters are particularly muddy, who knows if connections will ambitiously throw caution to the wind and let him take his chance.
Mystery Star ran well enough to suggest that he'll win races this season, while Fujin Dancer is most certainly going the right way. A well supported all-weather winner last time,he ran from 2lb out of the handicap here and finished a most respectable fourth, sticking on well up the inner.
Dandy Erin made a creditable return to action on his handicap debut. Tomorrow's World, another making her handicap debut, and having her first run of the campaign, was eased when beaten inside the last. She was reported to be unsuited by the ground. (TO'R)
