Lush Lashes held up in touch, smooth headway 4f out, close up 3f out, led 2f out and soon quickened clear, easily
Cape Amber held up in rear, headway over 2f out, ridden over 1f out, stayed on to chase winner inside final furlong, no impression
Dar Re Mi tracked leading pair, headway when bumped over 4f out, soon close up, every chance 2f out, soon ridden and kept on same pace
Moonstone tracked leaders, headway over 4f out and soon close up, ridden and every chance 2f out, driven and outpaced over 1f out, kept on under pressure inside final furlong
Sovereign´s Honour held up towards rear, headway over 3f out, ridden along to chase leaders over 2f out, soon driven and one pace
Cruel Sea led after 1f, ridden along and quickened 3f out, headed 2f out gradually weakened
Comeback Queen took keen hold, held up towards rear, headway 3f out, ridden to chase winner 2f out, driven and held when hampered and weakened well over 1f out
Sayyedati Symphony led 1f, chased leader, edged right on bend over 4f out, soon ridden and weakened over 3f out, behind and eased final 2f
The winner had finished strongly in the Guineas, a tactical affair, in which the steady gallop was against her. She was dropped in behind the leaders here and travelled smoothly throughout. The pace of the race, having started off fairly generously, was then slowed and the runners were barely doing a strong canter as they rounded the home turn.
The tempo of the race increased markedly before the three pole. Kevin Manning was always sitting pretty on Lush Lashes and, riding her with plenty of confidence, he produced her to lead at the two-furlong marker. She immediately picked up and, although edging slightly to her left once in front, she ran on strongly to the line. How could you not be impressed with the filly, who put five lengths of daylight between herself and her pursuers. Plans for the winner remain fluid. 1m4f should hold no fears for her and, no matter which route trainer Jim Bolger chooses to go, the highly talented Lush Lashes should continue to do him proud.
Cape Amber, denied a chance of lining-up for the 1,000 Guineas after producing a dirty scope, made a most encouraging reappearance here, albeit without troubling the winner. Patiently ridden, she picked up nicely for pressure before flattening out slightly in the closing stages, by which time the winner was beyond recall. She is open to further improvement.
Dar Re Mi, a quality-looking filly, travelled smoothly behind the front two. The lull in the pace before half-way saw Johnny Murtagh on Moonstone make headway from midfield rounding the turn and his mount and Dar Re Mi collided midships on the point of the bend. Soon travelling smoothly again, Dar Re Mi was asked a serious question more than two furlongs out, but she was never able to pick up and, in the final furlong, she looked a little ill at ease on this quick ground. Plans for her remain open, but John Gosden pointed out that he would be opting to avoid Lush Lashes and send his filly wherever the winner wasn't heading.
No sooner had Moonstone secured a promising pitch than the race began in earnest and she was found wanting, for a change of gear, and through a little bit of inexperience, approaching the two-furlong pole. She kept on again inside the last, and will doubtless improve as the season unfolds, and when she gains more experience and maturity.
Sovereign's Honour, who had proved unsuccessful in two maidens, one last season, one this, had plenty to find with Dar Re Mi on Sandown form. Held-up, she made headway to chase the leading group over two furlongs out, but she was never able to make any further impression and she was clearly held in the closing stages.
Cruel Sea, the Pretty Polly runner-up, soon went on. She was allowed to slow up mid-race, and was then set alight going to the three pole, but she was soon hard driven and she faded out of contention.
Comeback Queen, who seemed to get a little restless in the stalls, appeared to race keenly under restraint. Asked to pick up, her effort was short-lived, and although she looked a little tight for room at one stage, she ultimately finished well held. (TO'R)
