FANJURA was the most expensive of those sold at public auction, having fetched 290,000gns as a yearling, and he was the subject of encouraging reports. He was never worse than about third, and in what was strictly a two-horse race from more than a furlong out he just got the better of Khateeb, who had also been up there throughout and had the benefit of the rail to race against. Jeremy Noseda reckons he would have benefited from a stronger pace, and although he has no fancy entries at this stage he ought to go on to betterthings. However, one can never be sure, and it’s worth remembering that when the stable took the two divisions in 2006 with Secret World and Petrovich, neither won again, although they both showed useful form.
Khateeb was another expensive purchase, having cost $360,000. He seemed to know his job and he was worn down only inside the final furlong. He should win his maiden without too much trouble.
The surprise package among the principals was outsider Mr Hichens, who had only two behind him two furlongs out but ran on for a clear fourth. He has a sprinting pedigree, and a moderate one by Manton standards, but he was doing his best work at the finish and clearly got the trip.
Unbiased, representing the connections who took this in 2001 with the smart Dandoun, was staying on at the finish and ran respectably in fifth, just ahead of Stone Of Scone, who looked very inexperienced, and the long-time leader Effortless, who was the only filly in the field. (GD)
