Goinforporter chased leaders, lost place before halfway, 8th 5 out, ridden in moderate 6th after 3 out, kept on one pace

Shake The Bottle led, headed before 5th, chased leaders, 2nd halfway, disputed after 3 out, ridden in 2nd and no extra approaching 2 out, soon weakened

Geetonpaddy mid-division, 8th halfway, ridden and no impression after 3 out, kept on same pace

Regina Lo chased leaders, 3rd halfway, ridden in 4th after 3 out, weakened before next

Our Fella tracked leaders, 6th halfway, 6th 5 out, ridden and weakened next

Loggan Lass chased leaders, 4th halfway, ridden in 6th and no extra 3 out, soon weakened

Jamies Choice mid-division, fell 6th

As often happens in a race like this, jumping proved crucial and the winner ASHFIELD PRESENT did it just that bit better than his main rivals. Always in the first three, he went to the front at about halfway and just kept finding a bit extra on the final circuit to keep his rivals at bay. He kept his jumping together as well and just stayed on well to win by four lengths.

The winner is probably nothing special but displays a good attitude and might be good enough to pay his way in handicaps.

The one that paid a heavy enough price for his jumping was runner-up Artist’s Return. Always prominent, he made a few mistakes in the second half of the race which cost him, particularly at the third-last and again when dragging his hind legs through the final fence. He may well have won but for that.

Also paying for his jumping was the quietly fancied The Cub Wood. Held up at first, he began to close early on the final circuit and was threatening to mount a challenge when making a bad blunder at the second-last and another less serious mistake at the last. In the circumstances there’s probably an equal case to be made for thinking that he may well have won.

Goinforporter ran a race that wasn’t devoid of promise. He looks a one-paced individual and just stayed on at the one pace from the third-last.

Gambled-on favourite Shake The Bottle tried to make all until headed at about halfway and was still travelling reasonably well alongside the winner at around the third-last, but he came under pressure shortly afterwards and faded quite tamely.
