Victory went to 40-1 shot JAMES PINE, but he could have been double that price in this company on form this season. Invariably third in modest events, including when taking that position behind No Virtue (a winner since) at Andoversford on his latest start, he moved up several gears here and won comprehensively.
Jumping upsides the long-time leader Marblehead at the last, he pulled ahead and became a first winner under rules at the first attempt for rider Charlie Sands.
Trainer Sue Wilson said there had been no change to the horse's routine, but added: "We've always thought he was a good horse, and Charlie has got used to him and they've become more confident."
The latter finished third to Massimo at Towcester on his previous start and ran well again.
At 14, Caught At Dawn may lack a gear, but he is still game and has been in good form this season. He got tired after holding a promising position on the rail.
This has not been Beauchamp Oracle's season, as he much prefers fast ground. Given the conditions, he could havebeen expected to run better, a remark that also applies to Irilut.
