Former winners, Cannon Bridge and Mister Friday, were in the line-up, while a Gold Cup runner-up, TAKE THE STAND,arrived with two recent hunter-chase victories to his name and comfortably made it three.
He made most of the running, in company with Cannon Bridge until his rival was burned off at the top of the hill, and from there he was always doing enough to hold challenges from runner-up Mister Friday and third-placed You Do The Math.
Take The Stand had beaten Merchants Friend a head over course and distance last month, and now carried a double penalty of 6lb, but that rival was in trouble when unseating three out.
Winning rider Donal Devereux was convinced this was an improved version of an old favourite, and owner David Robbins said: "Peter [Bowen] insisted the horse should have a proper break at grass last summer, and that's why it took him time to get fully fit. He'll go to Stratford now [for the Pertemps Cup on May 24]."You Do The Math has been in good form this year and at eight was the youngest member of the field. He was going up in trip after wins at Stratford and Sandown, but stamina did not seem to be an issue - he was headed by two good horses.
Cannon Bridge, Britain's champion pointer in 2005 when he won nine races between the flags, made a very promising seasonal debut when second in the Racing Post Weekender Lady Dudley Cup at Chaddesley Corbett recently, but could not build on that, while Reflected Glory almost swam through the water jump and was immediately pulled up.
