Alessandro Volta made all, came wide into straight, wandered around from 2f out, ridden and kept on under pressure final furlong
King Of Rome tracked winner, camed wide into straight, ridden and lost 2nd over 2f out, rallied final furlong to regain 2nd near finish
Campanologist held up in touch, headway to press winner 2f out, ridden and lost 2nd near finish
Alan Devonshire steadied start, held up in rear, ridden and headway on inside over 2f out, weakened 1f out
By Command tracked leaders, ridden and weakeened over 1f out
A slipping saddle may have been partly to blame when he was only fourth at Leopardstown on his reappearance, but he had the run of the race here, jumping straight off in front and being allowed to use his stride by dictating throughout, with stablemate King Of Rome at his quarters. He did not handle the bend well though, and he hung first to the right and then quite badly to the left in the straight before just holding on in a driving finish.
Johnny Murtagh said he stayed the trip well and loved the ground, and he is now only 10-1 with William Hill and Paddy Power for Epsom. However, hewas offered at twice the odds by Coral and Totesport yet there was no stampede. It will be very surprising if Aidan O'Brien does not have stronger candidates. The winner's stablemate King Of Rome has acted as a pacemaker in the past, but no attempt was made to lead this time. He was inclined to hang in behind Alessandro Volta in the straight but stayed on well to regain second near the finish.
The three principals were clear of Alan Devonshire, who was detached by four lengths or so coming down the hill to the straight but saved ground by cornering best of all and briefly looked a danger. He likes this ground and seemed well primed, so thiswas a bit disappointing.
Impressive Windsor maiden winner By Command had to prove himself over this slightly longer trip on much quicker ground. He was looked after once beaten and may have found this plenty quick enough. (GD)
