A Listed race that was verging on Group 3 even after the defection of Regal Flush.
Despite the strong stayer Tungsten Strike setting off at afierce pace, there was a lull midrace, yet the principals came from well off the pace and the time was respectable. Jockeys confirmed the ground was fast.
SPANISH MOON had been a leading ante-post fancy for the Derby a year ago, but his season wasblighted by a non-displaced crack on his pelvis which limited him to just one autumn outing.
He showed he remains talented as he was knocked back last by having to evade the stricken Ivy Creek 4f out and was still last into the final 2f. Brought widest out midtrack, his long raking run cut them down impressively. As such he can be rated a much more clearcut winner and he remains a thoroughly unexposed sort. He holds the Group 2 Hardwicke entry and is likely to head there.
Munsef travelled well at the back after a slow start and saved ground sticking to the inside. With the pack swinging off the home bend, he was left a clear run up there and like the winner produced a long raking run to get ahead before nabbed by the winner late. This was a much better run than on soft ground and this Listed winner gives the form a solid look.
Tungsten Strike, taken out of "his" race, the Sagaro at the last meeting because of the softening ground, was running over short of his best, so it was not surprise that he made sure it was a stamina test. He has run really well considering and kept battling away against quicker rivals to not be beaten far. He clearly remains in top form and signposted his chances for the Group 2 Henry II Stakes at Sandown, which he won two years ago.
Lion Sands ended last season a Listed winner after just coming up short at Group 3 level. He looked a little rusty on this seasonal return and probably needs further these days.
Big Robert was very slowly away, so the fierce early pace did not suit and he could never land a blow. He has shown his best with some juice in the ground as well, so did not have conditions in his favour.
Classsic Punch looked big and well for this seasonal return and looked to blow up in the last 2f after chasing the leader through the race.
A similar remark applies to Young Mick, who came to have a chance early in the straight before getting tired.[BJ]
