Sweet Refrain led until over 3f out, soon weakened, tailed off and virtually pulled up over 1f out, tailed off

Five of these had run no more than three times, so they were hardly exposed, yet none of them was a match for the relative veteran UIG, who was running for the 41st time and winning her fifth race. In a race in which light-weights Sweet Refrain and Amie Magnificent forced a strong pace, Uig was patiently ridden and came from mid-field to lead a furlong or so out and then just hold the late challenge of Miss Jolyon.

Miss Jolyon challenged wide and late and only just failed to get up. This was a good effort.

Flying Time, making her AW debut, led approaching the straight and ran all right, as did hot favourite Moon Crystal, who had to be chased along through the early stages after a slowish start.

Further back, Lindy Lou made an encouraging debut for Chris Wall after losing her way for former trainer Charles Cyzer. The priority here was to get her to settle, so she was restrained at the rear of the field until making pleasing headway from three furlongs out. She ran out of room and had to be switched over a furlong out, and although she probably wouldn't have been placed, she would definitely have been closer with a clear run.
