DOVE COTTAGE came here in good form following his Warwick second last month, and he had won one of two previous races here. He did not get his own way in front, but that turned out to his advantage, for when General Flumpa took him on and then passed him, he had something to aim at. The pair were as much as 12-lengths clear of the pack before halfway, and when General Flumpa gave way again over three furlongs out, Dove Cottage was left in an unassailable lead.
Stuart Kittow said afterwards that he has always wanted a lead like this, and added that he is a bit more settled this year. Veteran Wait For The Will kept on from off the pace for a modest third, ahead of Lapina, who failed to improve on her reappearance fifth at Folkestone, and handicap debutant Songmaster, who is clearly limited but might improve a touch when stepped up in trip.
Hugh Collingridge felt that this may have come too soon for last year's winner Royal Premier, who had been raised 8lb for his Yarmouth win only 10 days previously and was theoretically well in under a penalty. He also felt that the race had not panned out to suit, with the two leaders going so far clear.
Steve Drowne reported that One To Follow slipped on the bend.
