This looked a fair maiden, but there were five in line inside the final furlong and the winner was one of the rank outsiders, so the form is nothing to get too excited about.
KELOWNA had not shown much on her debut at Newmarket last month, but connections felt she ran all right considering she was barely trained last year owing to a fractured femur. She had clearly come on for the experience, and although she was not well enough away to take full advantage of her rails draw she was soon nicely placed on thee heels of the leaders, where she travelled well. She did not have a lot of room going to two furlongs out but when eased to the outside for her effort she quickenedup well for a comfortable success.
Resurge shaped well on his only start last year yet was extremely weak on the exchanges in the morning. It was a different story on track, and he ran really well in second, although with no excuse, as he was never worse than about fourth.
Military Power came here with decent form to his name and he had been a bit unlucky at Wolverhampton on his return. He too was always thereabouts, but the two principals had a bit too much speed for him. John Hills will be looking to step him up to 1m2f before too long.
Red Icon stayed on for a respectable sixth after failing to enjoy the clearest of runs, but market leaders Crown Choice and French Art, both of whom have Group 1 entries, were major disappointments. Crown Choice had shaped well in a division of the Wood Ditton and has a St James's Palace entry, but he was being pushed along early in the straight and failed to pick up when asked to step up his effort on the inner, where the false rail ends well over a furlong out.
Newbury second French Art was physically one of the less substantial members of the field and he was taken down steadily. He raced close enough from his wideish draw, but he never looked like getting in a blow and dropped out to finish well beaten. He does not look one to take short odds about. David Elsworth reported that French Art was unsuited by the ground.
