This field did not look on the face of it up to standard but there were unexposed colts to the fore which springs hope of the race tradition being upheld.
The race was spoilt by being a cat and mouse affair with Pampas Cat dictating and slowing the pace before Wassily Kandinsky finally responded to somestrong shoving to take him on along with Donegal, but that was past the winning post into the last 7f.
This certainly did not put the emphasis on stamina but there was still two taking performances as Doctor Fremantle and All The Aces quickened away from the field in the final furlong.
DOCTOR FREMANTLE, beaten off a mark of 84 on his handicap debut last time, had to wait for room around the home bend when travelling powerfully and when the running rail ran out, he strode home like a strong stayer with the whip only waved in the final 50 yards after he had taken the measure of All The Aces. He is not in the Derby but depending how upcoming trials go (notably the owner's Twice Over in the Dante) he could yet be supplemented. More likely seems to be heading for Royal Ascot for the King Edward VII Stakes and if he continues to progress, there is the Irish Derby on the horizon.
All The Aces went the outside route in the final dash, shaping like a stayer in the making as he was pushed along togo with the injection of pace and just galloped on strongly widest out. He is a fine strapping colt, who continues to progress, having also run and won his handicap off a mere 82 mark. He could make up into a St Leger candidate and connections are eyeingthe Great Voltigeur.
Feared In Flight brought the strongest form into the race but after racing a shade keenly early and then racing widest out in the packing field, he could not boost either the Sandown Classic of Racing Post Trophy Group-race form.
Donegal chased the pace on this seasonal return against racefitter rivals but could not match the pace of the principals and was gasping for the line in the final 100 yards.
Vivaldi was most disappointing but was at the back in a steadily-run race and never looked happy around the tight bends. He swung wide into the straight and plugged on without ever threatening to get competitive. He can prove the bare form wrong back on a galloping track.
Yahrab travelled well tucked away on the rail with nowhere to go as the pace increased but then his stamina ran out.
