MICHITA ran out a resounding winner. The daughter of Dynaformer, sire of Lucarno, had failed to act around Epsom in the Oaks. On this flatter track, she settled beautifully off the sound gallop set by Hobby, sitting one off the rail in the mid-division. Merely shaken up to range alongside the leader, once her jockey gave her a crack she lengthened right away, and was impressive. Her trainer put up the Yorkshire Oaks as a target, indicating that he wanted to keep her racing against her own sex for this year. It would be no surprise to see her provide the Epsom heroine with a severe test if they reoppose on the flat Yorkshire track, while if last year's winner Peeping Fawn comes back to contest the race it would take on something of an unmissable air.
Arthur's Girl seemed to stumble slightly leaving the gates, but her jockey seemed more than happy to hold her up at the rear anyway, so it had little bearing on the result. A daughter of Hernando, sire of the Oaks winner Look Here, she travelled well throughout the race, briefly raising memories of Rebecca Sharp and Balisada who both won the Coronation Stakes for the yard in these colours in the ‘90s. She picked up well to come out of the pack and give chase to the winner in the straight without ever looking like getting to her. A minor Group race should be hers before too long.
Hobby set a sound gallop from the off, and picked up well off thehome turn to get everything bar the first two home on the stretch. Not able to go with the winner, she kept on well for third. The level of form she showed here ought to put her in as a good thing for something like a Listed contest, but her style of racing does set her up as something of a sitting duck.
Elmaleeha improved substantially on the basic form ofher maiden win. Out of a sister to top miler Bahri, she saw the trip out all right, despite not enjoying the clearest of passages.
Changing Skies sat closest to the leader through the early stages and was the cause of the scrimmaging as she weakened out of things. In fairness, she didn't get beaten by as far as she looked like being at one stage and a maiden would be a formality.
Sovereign's Honour already looked beaten when she got involved in a bit of a bumping match with Icon Project about two furlongs out, and having now taken in Group company on her last two starts, she might be better off thrown back into a maiden for a confidence boost.
Last year's Rockfel winner, Kitty Matcham, has now disappointed on all four starts this term, albeit in exalted company. She was stuck in behind a wall of horses turning into the straight, but didn't pick up once in the clear and is beginning to run out of excuses. It is starting to look as though she simply hasn't trained on.
Cape Amber, who had finished one place in front of the winner at Epsom, refused to settle in the early stages despite the pace being sound enough. Still throwing her head around after they had turned out of Swinley Bottom, she unsurprisingly had nothing left in thetank at the business end. This was only her fourth start, and she deserves more chances to show just how good she is, but she won't do so unless she becomes a little more tractable.
Alan Munro reported that Cape Amberran too free. [NQ]
