This looked a weaker renewal with few fillies going forward to suggest an upholding of the strong trend, and this was confirmed with the mixed-ability field being covered by no more than three lengths into the final 2f.
SABANA PERDIDA was an honourable 50-1 third last year and beat that race time with something to spare. She has done nothing wrong in winning two Group 3s in her only two runs since but has not shaped like a possible Group 1 performer of the future. The elevated Group 1 d'Astarte at Deauville is a possible target and with the inflated fillies' and mares' programme, she could yet attain that status. She clearly enjoys a testing and galloping track as a leggy long-striding filly.
Heaven Sent, who is a much smaller compact filly, represented a team that has a wonderful record in this race with the likes of Peeress and Echelon and she did not let the side down. However, she looked the most progressive filly in the race and also the likely winner when she went fully two lengths clearwhen asked. That looked plenty early enough and just wobbling inside the final furlong, hanging right, she was grabbed late. She stays 1m2f so it was easy to see why she was committed so early but she ended up a sitting target and looked to be idling in front after making her run. She certainly looks to have a Group 2 in her but it would also be no surprise to see her pitched into a Group 1, such as the Falmouth, where the stiffer uphill finish should suit.
Grecian Dancer was surprisingly found wanting for pace at the vital time despite having won over 5f, albeit in handicaps. This recent Group 3 winner has come into her own this year, unsurprisingly for a strapping mare, who looks to have reached full maturity. Unfortunately for racegoers, she isin foal and off to the paddocks now but has still signed off in good style, staying on strongly to grab an unlikely third after having to switch left after Majestic Roi had dashed across and past her into the final 2f. She is clearly a versatile sort andif she stamps her progeny with her looks, should produce some fine sorts.
Enforce confirmed her Epsom form with Barshiba, Selinka and Baharah and is another off to the paddocks on a high.
A complete change of tactics on Barshiba, from exaggerated hold-up tactics to making the running, saw her race more amenably and she still promises to land a Group race.
Nans Joy again proved shy of this class but still beat some notable rivals. She still does not impress as a likely Group scorer but is a solid Listed performer.
Fragrancy got very warm in the prelims and after setting the pace against the stands' rail wasbeaten fully 2f out. Her finishing position owes much to others behind her being eased when beaten long after she was.
Many Colours raced alone midtrack for nearly 3f before crossing to race with the main group, who had edged their way towards thestands' side before several edged back off it.
Harvest Queen and Selinka, who had form to be competitive in this field, were most disappointing, particularly the latter who looked well but was never really travelling at the back. Pushed along soon after halfway, she could never get competitive and was eased after her brief move into the final 2f.Baharah failed to run her race, and after showing pace on the midtrack, was throwing out distress signals when badly hampered and eased. This was not her running for the second consecutive race for whatever reason. Baharah's trainer reported that the run had probably come too soon after her Epsom race.[BJ]
