According to trainer Walter Swinburn, this was the first time the lightly-raced winner had actually come off the bridle. He said: "He only had to be pushed out at Wolverhampton and the bottomless ground made Newbury a non-event."
Hurricane Hymnbook showed his hand when chasing-home Ibn Khaldun in an Ascot handicap and can have been done no favours by what his conqueror subsequently achieved. Now 7lb higher, he stuck on well to go down in a driving finish. His stable has been relatively quiet but this was encouraging.
Bencoolen was a disappointment, having been backed in the offices and again on course. Never a threat, hemight have found the going on the soft side although it was drying out rapidly at this stage of proceedings.
Al Samha, a half-brother to 1,000 Guineas winner Sayyedati and Golden Snake, failed to endorse the form of his Wolverhampton maiden which had worked out until now.
