VIVA VETTORI was the least exposed runner in the field and won well, making the running,as he had done when winning his maiden over 1m2f here last September, and always holding on. The drop in trip came at the suggestion of Richard Hughes, who the maiden on him, and Martin Dwyer confirmed it suited the colt ideally.
If there is a reservation about the winner's performance it is that he was allowed an easy lead, but Dwyer said he does not need to be in front and he ought to go on to better things.
Northern Spy was held up and had only the hopelessly outpaced Eva Soneva So Fastbehind him down the far side, but he picked up really well in the straight, enjoying a good run through the pack and snatching second near the finish.
Councellor has won off a slightly higher mark, but he is just struggling a bit at present and had no obvious excuse.
Jake The Snake, who landed agamble on his return to action here a month ago, was held up in rear on this step up in trip, and although he made ground up the outer in the straight he was never going to get there. He was 4lb out of the handicap and 9lb higher than last time, so on balance it was not a bad effort.
