SHAMPAGNE had been expected to win on his Nottingham debut, but he ran into a filly who was just a bit too professional for him on the day. He made no mistake this time, soon grabbing the lead and winning well, with his rider giving him just a couple of smacks at around the furlong pole and then putting his stick down and pushing him out for a clear-cut success. Paul Cole thinks quite a bit of him and he looks one we will hear more of.
The Desert Saint was nicely backed for a winning debut, and he showed plenty of promise in second, chasing thewinner round the inner and keeping on too strongly for Flashmans Papers in the final furlong. He is from a successful family and is sure to be winning before long.
Flashmans Papers had shaped promisingly when third at Windsor on his debut, but hisoutside draw was an obvious drawback on this sharp turning track in a field of this size. There was just a moment early in the straight when it looked as if he might trouble Shampagne, but he couldn't quite get on terms and then lost second when weakening well inside the final furlong. A powerfully built sprinting type, he should gain compensation on an easy track.
Ritzy Wildcat, who was popular in the morning, started slowly and was far from disgraced, although one paced through the closing stages.
Premier Krug put her experience to good use and chased the winner into the straight before being left behind.
