Raised 8lb for a success on the turf 20 days earlier, he was held up before being brought wide to challenge from over a furlong out and held on gamely after leading in the final 100 yards. His handler thought he may have not quite run up to his best and that the drying ground may not have been ideal, but he will freshen him up and, hopefully, head for a Listed handicap at York on May 15. He should not go up much for this and had looked a better horse when winning at Doncaster last time. He is in the right hands and could well have more to offer.
Lord Theo would have been helped by the drying ground and ran a cracker on his return to the turf. He was soon in touch and went on approaching the final furlong and wasn't done with when the winner came to challenge. He is on a reasonable mark on his best form and looks ready for an early strike.
Montrachet was held up and didn't make much impact when the race began in earnest. The mudlover Rain Stops Play had led until the runner-up went on and ran creditably enough.
