Captain Webb held up in 3rd, headway to lead 4f out, clear 2f out, eased inside final furlong, very easily
Maximus Aurelius chased leader until 4f out, chased winner after, ridden and outpaced over 2f out, no chance after, just held on for 2nd
Kayflaa held up in last, ridden over 3f out, soon well outpaced, plugged on and nearly snatched 2nd
Benhavis led until 4f out, ridden and weakened 3f out, tailed off and eased inside final furlong
While he was a course winner and proven on easy ground, the way Joe Fanning's mount extended his advantage with seemingly minimum effort suggests his attentions will soon have to focus on better-class races. The colt is set for another hefty rise in the ratings, but, with his size and scope, who is to say he won't hit the high spots for Mark Johnston?
Maximus Aurelius might not have handled the ground or stayed, but his proximity to Kayflaa suggests he ran his race. He attracted market support on more than one occasion before getting off the mark last year, and is no slouch.
The fact that Benhavis was well behind in last place indicates he wasn't operating, and, in contrast, casts a shadow of sorts over the worth of the form. Granted his style of racing at two, it was expected he would appreciate a step up in trip. In the event, he was the first beaten and struggled in the final 2f, getting well detached from the others.
