Bentong chased leader, every chance 2f out, ridden to lead just over 1f out, forged ahead last 50yds
Angus Newz led, ridden 2f out, headed just over 1f out, no extra last 50yds
Woodcote taken down early, slowly into stride, took keen hold, tracked leading pair, pulled out and ridden over 1f out, kept on same pace
Sand Cat held up in touch, headway on outer 3f out, ridden over 2f out, weakened final furlong
Ajigolo taken down early, held up in touch, ridden over 2f out, no impression, eased inside final furlong
Having lost his way completely last season following a bountiful 2006 campaign in which he broke the track record at Salisbury, Bentong dominated affairs from the start with market rival Angus Newz, gradually getting on top from 2f out under Richard Quinn.
The jockey reported: "He would be better-suited by a conventional track and it was his class that got him through."
Angus Newz had no previous experience of switchback courses, but enjoyed the benefit of a recent run. She appreciated the slight cut in the ground and gave it her best shot only to be beaten by a revived Bentong, whose stable can do nothing wrong.
Sand Cat is more effective on sand and it wasn't surprising that he failed to menace after travelling wide.
Ajigolo had limited experience of undulations, and was always fighting a losing battle.
