Schindlers Son, who had been pulled up on his handicap debut at Chepstow six weeks ago but had since joined Peter Bowen from Alison Thorpe, had shaped with distinct promise when third in a maiden hurdle at Taunton in February and he more than lived up to that promise here. His jumping lacked fluency - hardly surprising given his inexperience, this being only his fifth run over hurdles - but he showed a good attitude under pressure and can only improve.
Overserved, who had fortune on his side when scoring at Ayr last month but is still very much on the upgrade, ran an outstanding race off his new mark - up 9lb since Ayr - but the handicapper is not going to make things any easier for him from now on.
Or Jaune was well-backed on this return to action after a year off and might have got into the thick of the action with a better run.But he stumbled when closing on the leaders after the third last, losing some momentum as a result, and he got going too late to be a serious factor.
Among the also-rans notice should be made of Valiant Shadow, who travelled well until a blunder three out knocked him out of contention. He failed to find a race last season but ran some good races in defeat and deserves a change of luck.
