Almaydan raced keenly, in touch, chased leader approaching 11th, ridden and lost 2nd before 2 out, kept on same pace from before last
Massini Sunset midfield, headway 9th, ridden to chase leaders approaching 2 out, one pace from after last
Lucifer Bleu led, mistake 8th, headed 10th, lost place 11th, no danger after
Pretty Star always behind, reminders after 5th, ridden approaching 8th, toiling before 10th
Le Seychellois always behind, toiling from 6th, tailed off
Maurice prominent, steadied after 4th, ridden and beaten 4 out, tailed off when pulled up before last
Some Timbering always behind, soon ridden along, tailed off when pulled up before 2 out
Young Collier prominent to 8th, struggling after, tailed off when pulled up before 10th
Lord Ryeford held up, headway 9th, ridden approaching 3 out, weakened and pulled up before 2 out
That played well with NICE TRY, who had been tried at up to 3m last season and appreciated the good gallop over this intermediate distance. His jumping had let him down at Aintree last time, but he jumped well here and was always doing just enough on the run-in to hold the late charge of Laskari. This was a career-best effort from Nice Try, but there is likely to be more to come from him yet.
Laskari, a fair novice three years ago but lightly raced since, was patiently ridden and was not asked for his effort until approaching two out. He had to be switched round Nice Try on the run to the last, and was then inclined to edge left under pressure on the run-in. However, he could not really be faulted for effort and can win off his present mark.
