This latest running unfortunately proved a messy affair, with the first nine covered by only four lengths or so and several hard-luck stories, but SLUGGER O'TOOLE avoided all of the trouble and confirmed that his Wolverhampton defeat of the highly rated Skadrak was no fluke with a successful handicap debut, having raced in the first three virtually throughout and gone to the front approaching the furlong pole. The Britannia at Royal Ascot is a possibility now, and he will have a break in the meantime.
Meydan Princess had come with a blistering late run to beata well-handicapped rival at Kempton, and she nearly repeated the trick here. Slowly away and held up right at the back of the field, she looked to be full of running over two furlongs out, but had nowhere to go until switched outside approaching the furlong pole. She then made up two or three lengths on the winner, but he was not stopping and she could not quite get there.
Billion Dollar Kid, making his debut for a new stable, had a clear run up the rail and had no apparent excuse, but Dubai Dynamo, another who has switched stables, got no run at all and finished strongly, leaving the impression he will be well worth a close look next time.
Ancien Regime is clearly regarded potentially better than a handicapper, as he has been given a Golden Jubilee entry, but he had to prove himself over this longer trip. He might not have stayed, but would not have won at 6f either.
Insaaf, reportedly over the top on her final start last year, did not get much if a run, and nor did Throne Of Power, who was dropping back in trip after winning over 1m on his debut and finished on the heels of the placed horses despite his rider having to accept the situation when he got no run up the rail. Both are better than this and Throne Of Power, who really took the eye in the paddock, is well worth keeping an eye on. (GD)
