FINJAAN carried his owner's second colours, but he made an excellent impression, coming from behind with a good run on the outer to win decisively without resort to the whip.
First-time-out juvenile winners from the stable are far from frequent, and this son of Royal Applause is expected to improve considerably, as he had reportedly not done a lot of work. He was also a bit slowly away and raced a touch keen in rear through the early stages. Royal Ascot is hopefully on the agenda, with another run in the meantime, but it remains to be seen which race he is targeted at.
Ouqba, who was such a promising third here on his debut, carried the winning owner's first colours and showed speed throughout, but he changed his legs repeatedly, possibly feeling the drying ground. He kept on well again on meeting the rising ground and finished clear of the others, but the winner was too good for him. He is sure to land a maiden, but easier ground may well suit him better.
Heliodor, second in a fair race at Windsor first time out, showed speed against the rail, but he was beaten fair and square.
Cool Art, all the rage in the morning and from the first crop of highly promising first-season sire One Cool Cat, travelled well behind the leaders and was just about last off the bridle. When he was asked for his effort he found less than looked likely, but he should do better with the experience under his belt. (GD)
