There was a steadier start than likely in the Cambridgeshire and ultimately not many got competitive as Oceana Gold picked up the baton.
PROPONENT had made a promising comeback over 1m at Newbury last time having been gelded over the winter. He needed the extra furlong to wear down Oceana Gold and heads to Royal Ascot for either the Wolferton or Duke of Edinburgh. The worryfor those midsummer races are that he has looked to prefer some juice in the ground.
Oceana Gold made a strong start last season and not as big or gross as some here, he again hit the ground running. Certainly the extra furlong here did not beat him as despite hanging left under pressure, he kept on strongly to beat the rest comprehensively.
King Charles took the eye as, back from Dubai, he sat well back in the pack and was the only one able to close on the front two in the final two furlongs. He was still gaining at the line and looks ready to win a similar heritage handicap over 1m2f.
Last year's winner Supaseus sat stands' side in a group of three initially and shadowed Oceana Gold before being outpaced into the final two furlongs. He rallied when joined by Humble Opinion on the stands' side flank, but still looks high in the handicap, although connections are thinking about stepping him up in trip after this effort.
Fishforcompliments ruined his chances by racing far too freely. He could only edge closer before weakening in the final furlong. He has not impressed as wanting this trip and a fast-run 1m may see him in better light this season.
Free Offer, fresh early on her return, was not disgraced against bigger colts on this seasonal return, but Heaven Knows could not build on a promising return at Nottingham recently, flattening out disappointingly after making a move three furlongs out.
Kingsdale Orion was another to race too keenly and he could not frank the good impression he made at Newbury on his arrival from Ireland.
Folio showed he is in good form, settled at the back and staying on as others wilted without threatening to get competitive in this much stronger contest than hisGreat Leighs win recently.
The big disappointments were Many Volumes and Gulf Express, who are big taking individuals, but both were beaten by halfway. Many Volumes dropped away worryingly quickly, while Gulf Express, shoved along after only acouple of furlongs, was never travelling. (BJ)
