The ground, on an overcast but warm day, was just on the slow side of good, but the course appeared in good nick for its first meeting of the season.
There were only four runners in this juvenile event and the finish was fought out by one of those with previous experience - VERONICAS BOY - and one of the newcomers, Where's Reiley. The former, who was outpaced before halfway, picked up with a vengeance late on and stayed on strongly to grab this prize in the final half-furlong. A step-up to six furlongs will suit him even better.
Metroland, a May 1 foal, was produced to have every chance inside the final two furlongs, but he was unable to pull out a strong finish and faded inside the last as he edged tohis left.
Russet Reward, who had shaped well on his debut at Musselburgh, failed to build on that performance here. Having bowled along in front, he flattened out when pressure was applied and was found wanting inside the last.
