An easy maiden winner after his Leicester second to 1,000 Guineas fancy Spacious, Dr Faustus has a middle-distance pedigree and was open to plenty of improvement over this extra 2f. In a race in which several runners pulled much too hard, Dr Faustus chased the pace until going to the front around 3f out. He was soon in charge, and they finished pretty much in single file behind him, which strongly suggests the form is sound. He was no doubt leniently treated here off 89, but he might well turn out a Group horse and so would still be of interest off a new mark in the high 90s. It would be no surprise if the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot was on the agenda, although he is also entered in the King Edward VII.
Ramona Chase, gelded since last season, was still too headstrong and ran really well in the circumstances. Dropped right out early on, he made headway on the far side of the pack to get within a length or two of the winner running into the Dip and, although no match for the winner, he kept on well for second.
There was daylight back to Siberian Tiger, who ran respectably giving weight all round, and another to Nottingham second Drill Sergeant, who led for much of the way but ended up beaten too far to have paidDerby fancy Curtain Call much of a compliment. Noble Citizen was not sure to stay and hardly helped himself by racing freely.
The rest were beaten upwards of 16 lengths and will make limited appeal in the short term. Among them, Cuban Missile pulled far too hard. (GD)
