OFF THE RECORD is not the first sprinter to struggle through his three-year-old career, especially as he hit the gates running on the Fibresand to soar to a high mark. He reworked plenty of form here but deserves an equal amount of credit for this effort beacause he was running into a headwind when others had cover. He saw out this tough test well. Connections are thinking about dropping back down to 5f for the Dash at Epsom and this half-brother to Moorehouse Lad, who similarly improved at five to win the Group 3 King George at Goodwood, is one to keep on the right side of.
Damika edged up the ratings in defeat last time which proved most costly here as he again put in a strong effort which only just failed. His rating limits his opportunities outside these big handicaps.
Fullandby did not get the run of the race in that he pulled hard in a pocket against the moderate pace for this sprint distance. He got slightly outpaced as the tempo increased, being ridden along past halfway before sticking ongamely.
Baby Strange has hinted at refinding his good juvenile form and continues to do so. He is versatile but these conditions were not guaranteed to play to his strengths. He attacked down the midtrack wide outside of the main bunch without quite threatening to get to the principals.
King's Apostle showed good all-round pace and is one to note as he was making his seasonal reappearance against racefit rivals. He kept on well after looking in trouble into the final 2f as they kicked for home. His 7lb rise for his backend win may not stop him adding to his successes this year.
Knot In Wood should be rated better than the bare form as he conspicuously did best of the disadvantaged low numbers. As he was also settled off the pace, his run in the final 2f should not be understimated as he also hung left towardsthe main group. While he has just come up short of Listed standard, he looks a readymade winner of a similar prize to this.
Mutamared could not add to his great record in this race, having won it two years ago and finished second last year. He still looks to need more relief from the handicapper.
Special Day did some strong running through the final 2f from an unpromising position at the back of the small group between the other two. She looks to be progressing towards another overdue win.
Tajneed was not disgraced with conditions going against him. He showed speed but, as a mile winner, did not have the all-round fierce pace that would have suited better on easier ground.
Beaver Patrol, 12lb higher than for last year's win, stood no chance with his railside draw but he battled away up with the pace and remains in good heart if difficult to place to advantage.
*Hinton Admiral was reported to have hung left. Knot In Wood was reported to have suffered interference and Northern Dare was reported to have hung left throughout. (BJ)
