Ceremonial Jade steadied start, took keen hold, held up in last place, headway over 2f out, strong run from over 1f out, led well inside final furlong, soon clear
Edge Closer chased leader, ridden just over 2f out, chance 1f out, not pace of winner last 100yds, snatched 2nd on line
Salient led, ridden 2f out, headed well inside final furlong, not pace of winner last 100yds, lost 2nd on line
Transcend chased leaders, not clear run over 1f out, switched right inside final furlong, never able to mount a challenge
Beauchamp Viceroy took keen hold, held up in touch, effort and short of room briefly well over 1f out, kept on final furlong
Bentong held up in touch, ridden over 2f out, outpaced 2f out, behind after
Edge Closer proved a progressive type last season, with two Ascot successes among his tally. Having been given a nice break since his comeback win at Kempton, he did nothing wrong but ultimately was scuppered by his 7lb rise in the weights.
Transcend proved a slightly disappointing favourite, although he didn't have the clearest of runs from over a furlong out and had to be switched after his path up the inner was blocked by Salient. This traffic problem rather than an 8lb rise for his Thirsk win proved his undoing.
